Yesterday and Today – a brief history

It all began in 1946 with two women cared enough to worry about a stray white dog. Sixty six years later, the same is true. With their no kill philosophy, Fox Valley Animal Welfare League has rescued countless companion animals in need. In 1992 they begin a partnership with the city of Aurora Animal Control and Care. Their network expanded to include over 100 licensed no kill rescue organizations that helped to foster and place over 3,000 companion pets in their forever homes.

In 2009, the next step was taken to provide spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines and other necessary surgeries to all animals waiting adoption at Aurora Animal Control and Care. In a continued effort to further support their no kill philosophy, in 2011, FVAWL turned to prevention. Their new role in the community is to offer convenient and affordable spay/neuter surgeries and wellness care directly to animal rescue organizations, low-income families and the general public.

Their new Spay/Neuter Clinic and Community Center will open on February 28th, 2012. The community Center will add a Pet Food Pantry in spring of 2012.

CELEBRATING 65 YEARS OF HUMANE HISTORY AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

• Founded in 1946 by three ladies who were determined to improve the lives of animals in the community.
• Original founders had three goals: get people interested in animals; promote the adoption of homeless pets; and to help stop animal abuse.
• Formed a partnership with the City of Aurora Animal Control and moved into their new facility in 1992.
• Incorporated as a non-profit organization in December of 1996.
• Implemented the Puppy Love program where adoptable pets visited 8 local nursing homes to spend time with the residents.
• In 2012, opening a pet food pantry for low income families who are having trouble feeding their pets.

PROMOTING THE REDUCTION OF PET OVERPOPULATION

• Provided low cost spay/neuter certificates to anyone adopting an animal from the City of Aurora Animal Control.
• In 2006, implemented an annual Walk for the Animals fundraising event to specifically support spay/neuter efforts.
• In 2009, provided spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and necessary tests for all animals prior to being adopted or rescued from the City of Aurora Animal Control.
• In 2012, opening a state-of-the-art high quality low cost spay/neuter clinic benefiting low income families, rescue groups and the general public.

FORMING PARTNERSHIPS TO ELIMINATE THE EUTHANASIA OF HEALTHY, ADOPTABLE PETS

• From 2006-2011, partnered with over 100 no-kill rescue groups to provide homes for nearly 3000 pets who would have been euthanized at the City of Aurora Animal Control due to space constraints and special needs.
• Created a foster home network to provide care for kittens, puppies and pets with special needs.
• In 2006, implemented an annual Paws in the Park event for pet rescue groups and vendors to come together and celebrate saving so many animals’ lives over the years.
• Funded a veterinarian to exam and check all animals being considered for adoption or rescue from the City of Aurora Animal Control.
